Back in college I worked co-op, trying to earn some pay I packed myself a sandwich nearly every working day But if we went out for lunch I'd bring that brown lunchbag home It may get stale and shitcanned or be a snack that night when I'm alone
One Friday after work I drove my car to Michigan State To party with my buddies, drink some beer, and stay up late That night we smoked some weed and got high as a kite Then suddenly I needed food, to make my drunk ass feel alright
I said, "I'm going to my car—I've got a sandwich there" His roommate looked at me like life was terribly unfair "I wish MY car had a sandwich"—the greatest line I'd ever heard The brilliance of his observation was incredibly absurd
We laughed until our stomachs hurt and tears ran down each face That stupid little sentence was pure genius in that place I stumbled to the parking lot and opened up the trunk Then ate that baloney sandwich 'cause you need to feed a kid who's really drunk

It wasn't fast or fancy, and the paint had lost its shine But the car that carried lunch was certainly divine Some guys had better stereos and pimped-out cars to ride But mine was an oasis for a wasted kid outside
Years later I told Kathleen how that college night went down She laughed about the sandwich and the car I drove around She didn't care about the make, the model, or the year She wished she had a sandwich every time her car was near
"I wish MY car had a sandwich"—Kathleen still says today Like every car should come with lunch when hunger comes your way It may not sound that funny if you've never gotten stoned But a car that has a sandwich is a damn fine car to own
